The project is Vodafone Arena is a leading-edge 10,000 seat stadium, it was built using the latest in construction techniques. Uses for the stadium include sports such as track-cycling, basketball and tennis, as well as serving as an entertainment venue as we all know. A vital design specification was that the 3108m2 openable roof was reliable, strong and wouldn't rust. Opened recently, it was hailed by Tennis World as the major success of the 2001 Australian Open.
The solution was Fielders' KingKlip 700 zincalume cladding. The 700mm concealed-fix roofing sheets were rolled on-site to 27 metre lengths, using Fielders' mobile roofing mill. A onsite Architect requested on-site rolling of the cladding to reduce the risk of sheet damage through packaging and handling – which they had experienced on other jobs using older style materials, they used wide sheets which meant workers could get the building envelope sealed quickly. "We cut down on problems such as strapping and shipping, which can be an issue with pre-packaged materials," he said. "Sheets can be dented or bent and paint stripped - all unsightly and all leading to corrosion and rust in the long term. But this is not an issue with the guaranteed Fielders product."
