Plywood Box Beams
In line with tradition of the timber supplier, plywood box beams demonstrate the capability of timber and timber as a construction material. Consequently, the complex consciously displays a diversity of different timber based products, structural forms and jointing techniques.
Solid timber is used in bolted columns, framing and trusses and plywood in diaphragms, shear walls and external cladding. Plywood is also matched with other timber products in the webs of beams and as nailed gusset plates. Glue laminated elements, mainly radiata pine, form the main portal frames while LVL is used in bolted and nailed trusses and as a framing material.
In some parts of the building, structural and constructional simplicity was the key. The large warehouse, with its 30 m span plywood box beams, was devised so that the entire roof structure could be assembled, serviced and clad on the ground. With the supporting columns hinged to the end of each plywood box beam, the completed roof was raised in a single crane lift. The corner bolts were then fixed and the braces nailed home. Plywood shear walls brace each end of the building. In other parts of the building, there is a visual cacophony of forms and structures.
